Dear First Family and Friends,

 

Update versus Upgrade. I recently checked my phone and was informed that I needed to update several apps, 53 to be exact. It had been awhile since I last checked my phone. This usually does not take a long time, especially if I have sufficient wi-fi connections. As I was waiting for the updates to finish I had a message on the phone that said an upgrade was available.

This upgrade would include a new phone, more power, longer battery life, and easier to use. I have yet to receive an upgrade that delivers on that last promise. This upgrade would come with some sacrifices. First, I would have to have a new phone. Now, that may not seem like a major sacrifice for you, but I like my familiar phone. Another sacrifice, not everything I have on my old phone would transfer to this new phone.

Contemplating this decision, I am reminded that the call of Christ is a call for a complete      upgrade rather than an update.  So much of the time we think of an update, fixing an existing problem, improving this or that will help. But in reality what we really need is a total upgrade. Christ calls us to allow Him to give us this upgrade. Yes, we may think we have to sacrifice some things, but in the long run it is not really a sacrifice.  We become new creation, the old is gone, the new has come.
